Serbia’s ruling nationalist party claimed victory in the capital Belgrade on Sunday (2 June) in a rerun of local elections, nearly six months after allegations of fraud in a previous poll sparked weeks of protests.
Thousands of people rallied in the Serbian capital of Belgrade on Tuesday (16 January) to protest alleged fraud committed by President Aleksandar Vuฤiฤ’s governing party during parliamentary and local elections last month.
Serbia’s biggest opposition coalition said Tuesday (26 December) it will boycott election re-runs in parts of the country, after more than a week of protests against alleged electoral fraud.
Serbia announced Wednesday (20 December) that it will re-run its recent election in certain areas, according to state media, just days after nationwide voting triggered protests and international condemnation over alleged fraud.
President Aleksandar Vuฤiฤ declared victory in a snap parliamentary election on Sunday (17 December), after pollsters projected his ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) was on track to easily win.
Ahead of the 17 December parliamentary elections in Serbia, a delegation from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe expressed concern about “unprecedented levels of incitement to fear and attacks on the opposition”.
